Extended Analysis — Civic Intelligence Record

Boise's fire protection traces to January 24, 1876, when 28 volunteers organized Engine Company #1 and Hook and Ladder Company #1 out of a converted Main Street blacksmith shop — a building that burned down in 1883. The city transitioned to a paid professional force in 1902, beginning with a part-time chief and a handful of drivers. Expansion accelerated through the mid-twentieth century as population surged: the 1960s brought a 107-person staff and call volumes exceeding 1,000 alarms annually for the first time, and by 1989 annual calls surpassed 7,000. Aircraft rescue infrastructure arrived in 1965 with a dedicated airport station. The department reached 15 stations by 1998 and promoted its first female captain in 2019.

The department operates under four organizational divisions: Emergency Services, Support Services, Planning and Administration, and the Bureau of Fire Prevention. A Pipe and Drum Corps and Honor Guard function alongside operational units. Specialized capabilities include a Hazardous Materials Team, an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting team, a Dive Team, and a Technical Rescue Team — a portfolio that reflects both Boise's urban density and its proximity to the Boise Airport and surrounding wildland interface.

Seventeen fire stations distribute coverage across more than 130 square miles of city territory. Contract agreements extend the department's operational reach into suburban Ada County, covering Garden City and Hidden Springs through the Whitney Fire District and North Ada County Fire and Rescue. Emergency medical services remain structurally separated, with Ada County Paramedics serving as the county-level EMS provider — a division of labor that shapes resource deployment and interagency coordination across the metro area.

Boise Fire operates as a municipal department funded through the City of Boise's general budget, making its fiscal baseline tied directly to city appropriations rather than a standalone fire district levy. The department's scale — Idaho's largest by personnel and station count — positions it as a regional anchor for mutual aid, specialized incident response, and training infrastructure across the Treasure Valley. No procurement records were indexed for this entity at the time of this record's production.

It is the largest fire department in Idaho. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are provided by the separate county agency, Ada County Paramedics. Currently, Boise Fire Department has 300+ full time employees, 17 Fire Stations, a Hazardous Materials Team, ARFF team, Dive Team and a Technical Rescue Team. The Department serves a population of 236,000 residents in 130+ square miles. == History == Boise's first fire department was created on January 24, 1876; consisting of 28 volunteers. Engine Company #1 and Hook and Ladder Company #1 were housed in a converted blacksmith shop at 619 Main St., a one-story wood building which, ironically, burned down on Sept. 23, 1883. In 1902, the city created a paid, professional fire department with a part-time chief, three drivers and "pay-per-call" stokers and firefighters. The 1940's population growth led to a large expansion. The 1950's saw the introduction of radios and the dispatch office, but also saw a number of major downtown structure fires. The 1960's saw a staff of 107 firefighters with a call volume exceeding 1,000 alarms for the first time. The airport also needed specific Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) equipment, and another station was built on-site in 1965. The 1970's saw 14 new pieces of equipment and vehicles purchased. With Boise's population reaching 102,000 in 1980, the department could not keep up. In 1982, over $2.46 million was lost due to an arson spree. And by 1989, the call volume was exceeding 7,000 call annually. The 1990's saw new construction, and upgraded training facility and grew to 15 stations by 1998. Their first female captain was promoted in 2019. == Organization == The department has four (4) divisions as well as a Pipe and Drum corp and an Honor Guard. === Bureaus === Emergency Services Support Services Planning and Administration Bureau of Fire Prevention == Operations == === Fire Station Locations and Apparatus (2021) === The BFD firefighting operations are based out of the city's 17 local fire stations. * EMS Services supplied by Ada County Paramedics == See also == South Boise Fire Station National Interagency Fire Center == References == == External links == Boise Fire Department Idaho Fallen Firefighters Foundation ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── ## SOURCE 3 — WIKIDATA { "status": "ok", "name": "Boise City Fire Department", "slug": "cityofboise-org-departments-fire", "qid": "Q30596201", "wikidata_url": "https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30596201", "label": "Boise Fire Department", "description": "boise, Idaho Fire Department", "aliases": [], "sitelinks": { "enwiki": "Boise Fire Department" }, "population": null, "population_date": null, "latitude": null, "longitude": null, "area_km2": null, "inception_date": null, "official_website": "https://www.cityofboise.org/departments/fire", "government_type": null, "head_of_gov": null, "parent_division": null, "country": "United States", "image_url": null } ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── ## SOURCE 4 — CENSUS ACS 5-YEAR { "status": "not_found", "name": "Boise City Fire Department", "slug": "cityofboise-org-departments-fire", "class": "FIRE DISTRICTS — ADA COUNTY", "county": "" } ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── ## SOURCE 5 — USASPENDING.GOV { "status": "ok", "name": "Boise City Fire Department", "slug": "cityofboise-org-departments-fire", "citadel_class": "FIRE DISTRICTS — ADA COUNTY", "county": "", "source": "USASpending.gov", "source_url": "https://api.usaspending.gov/api/v2", "fetched": "2026-06-20T01:04:49.130020Z", "totals": { "total_usd": 0, "count": 0, "contract_count": 0, "grant_count": 0, "contract_total": 0, "grant_total": 0 }, "top_agencies": [], "awards": [] } ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── ## SCHEMA ANALYSIS — BOISE STANDARD WEIGHTED COVERAGE # scored_type : # coverage_score : 0.0000 # coverage_label : none # negative_space : ['Action', 'BioChemEntity', 'CreativeWork', 'Event', 'Intangible', 'MedicalEntity', 'Organization', 'Person', 'Place', 'Product', 'Taxon'] ════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════ # END PROVENANCE WINDOW
