Toddlers (18 mo. – 3 years) are absorbent learners who build their understanding through interacting with and observing the world around them. To give them all they need to grow, we provide environments that are rich with experiences as well as knowledgeable, nurturing teachers to guide them. Learning is rooted in the routines of daily living: caring for the plants and animals in the class, practicing hygiene and toilet learning, and tidying and cleaning the space around them. Each child is a significant, contributing member of their class community. Class Environment The classrooms in our Boise preschool are warm, welcoming, and home-like, where everything from the furniture to the silverware is the perfect size for small children to use independently. Each class has an attached outdoor classroom, and children spend their days indoors and out. They are surrounded by natural materials that are lovely and inviting. Curriculum Independence Toddlers are striving for independence. Whether it's pouring their own glass, putting their own clothes into the hamper, or putting on their own boots, we support the things they love to do for themselves! Motor Development Toddlers have a lot of growing to do! The materials and equipment in the toddler environments support large motor development (climbing, running, balancing) and small motor development (grasping, pinching, using tools). Language Development Children explode into language in their first three years, so we provide a language-rich environment. Teachers use full sentences and precise vocabulary. Songs, poems, and finger plays can be heard throughout the day. Socialization The mixed age toddler classroom has children in a range of social development: they learn from and with each other. Outdoor Classrooms At Lakewood Montessori in Boise , nature is never far away! Every classroom has a dedicated outdoor space with room to dig, climb, splash, garden, and work (rain or shine). Students flow in and out of the outdoor classroom throughout their work period, with the freedom to choose their ideal workspace. They can read beside the sprouting vegetables, or count beneath the hummingbird feeder… what a lovely way to learn! Why Nature? Meaningful experiences in nature make children happier, healthier, and more connected to the world around them. Natural Playground Our enormous playground is a classroom in its own right! We’ve thoughtfully developed our natural playground to support learning across domains. This space features an art studio, performance stage, water and sand play areas, a mud kitchen, a loose parts construction zone, and two gardens. Our Children’s House program students spend at least one full hour in this enriched environment every day. This is a place where beautiful memories are made! She earned her Montessori Teaching Credential through the Center for Guided Montessori Studies. She is originally from Blackfoot, Idaho and moved to Boise to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Boise State University. Ms. Janelle is a natural in the classroom. She was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, and moved to Boise in elementary school. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Communication Disorders and Deaf Education from Utah State University, and a Masters of Education from Whitworth University. She obtained her AMI Montessori teaching credential through Montessori Northwest in 2021. Before starting her Montessori journey, Ms. Xandra worked with children most of her career as a dance instructor, swim instructor, kindergarten reading volunteer, and nanny. Ms. Xandra is a Montessori mom to three daughters: Gwen, Annie and Ellie. In her free time, Ms. Xandra loves to sing and play music, hike, power lift, and spend time with her friends and family. She studied business administration at Boise State University before travel took her to Germany, Florida, and Japan. She earned her Montessori Teaching Credential at the Early Childhood level through Caspari Montessori Institute. She’s the proud mom of a college student (who used to look after the Lakewood reptiles during school breaks). She enjoys traveling and spending time with her family. Ms. Lorena is a calm and comforting presence in her classroom community. She is a native Spanish speaker with a deep love for the culture and community she shares with many of Lakewood Montessori’s students. Her students love to converse in Spanish with her. Before coming to Lakewood, she worked in the Boise School District for 11 years as a first grade teacher and a special education teacher. Ms. Ally has a Bachelor’s of Arts from University of Idaho, a Masters in Education from Northwest Nazarene University, and is completing her Montessori Teaching Credential from the Authentic Institute of Montessori. She has a 120 pound dog named Tug, who she likes to take camping and hiking. In her free time she enjoys spending time outdoors and with friends and family. Children in these classes work with hands-on learning materials in an array of subjects, with each lesson building towards the next, more complex one. Repetition is key for building neural connections, so children are free to engage with their chosen lesson on their own internal timeline. This work takes place during a 3 hour period, uninterrupted by transitions. The teacher gives individual lessons to each child, observing for understanding and connecting every learner to the next exciting challenge. Over their three years in the classroom, children are increasingly knowledgeable and confident, able to act as stewards of the learning environment in their own right. Class Environment The Children’s House classrooms are lovely, welcoming spaces filled with plants, pets, Montessori learning materials, and child sized furniture. There is artwork on the walls, music in the air, and a quiet buzz of activity as children are immersed in concentration. These multi-aged classes provide a non-competitive environment in which the children assist one another in lessons or are free to work independently. Instead of sitting in desks in a row, children determine their workspace: at a child-sized table or floor mat, indoors or in the outdoor classroom. Families are often surprised how peaceful and engaged a group of young children can be! We understand that when learning is self-motivated and interest driven, it is a joyful pursuit. Curriculum Practical Life The foundation of a child's interactions in the classroom, practical life exercises give children meaningful ways to care for themselves, their environment, and the living beings around them. These exercises build independence and a sense of stewardship, as well as indirect skills like balance and coordination. Sensorial Dr. Maria Montessori's research cemented how connected a child's senses are to their cognitive development. She designed materials specifically to help children build a complex understanding of their surroundings, and these materials are used in our classrooms to this day. Language The classroom is a language-rich space, where children's vocabularies grow through contact with conversations, songs, stories, poems, and manipulatives. As they master spoken language, they're guided into hands-on experience with the written word (first writing, then reading). Mathematics Montessori math sets a strong foundation for the logical skills your child will use through the rest of their life. The curriculum builds off of concrete materials, allowing a child to internalize concepts through their senses and establishing a deep, practical understanding of mathematics. Science & Culture This curriculum is connected not just to the materials on the shelf, but real-life experiences and conversations. These subjects are holistically tied to the rest of the curriculum: from counting and naming the pollinators in our garden, to sharing stories about children all around the world.
